The Paper

Providing detailed news and happenings in and around Cobar to the mining and farming communities, the Cobar Age is the town’s only paid publication. Published each Wednesday the Cobar Age allows people of the Cobar area to contribute to the paper and thus spread news around the community. Although the Cobar Age has a relatively small print run, and is the longest serving newspaper each copy of the paper can be read by up to 10 people.

The Market

Cobar is a bustling and prosperous town on the edge of the outback in Western New South Wales.

The Shire is the size of Tasmania, yet has a population of 7,000 people.

Cobar is called the Copper City for good reason. Presently there are four mining operations: CSA which is mined for orebodies; Elura mine for sulphide ore, being rich in zinc, lead and silver; the Peak Gold mine for gold and silver; and Murdekin Resources mine for gold and copper.

Much of the land around Cobar is used for sheep grazing.

Mt Grenfell, 40km west of Cobar, has great Aboriginal historical significance with art sites containing over 1,300 motifs.
